Can you imagine fishing miles of pristine streams
teaming with wild Rainbows and Brookies or casting to rising trout
at the base of several hundred feet of cascading water falls? Well
now you can stop dreaming and start fishing at the Mundy Ranch in
Northern New Mexico's Chama Valley. A fisherman's fantasy
awaits anglers of all levels of ability with a diversity of waters
and a variety of fish. Do-it-yourself or obtain the services of an
Orvis-endorsed guide with all the equipment.
The spin-fisherman and the novice fly-fisherman can enjoy the numerous
lakes heavily stocked with an array of trout species. Fish well
over 20" are common in the clear high-mountain waters. Elk and mule
deer are frequent visitors to waters edge early and late in the day,
and wild turkeys, grouse, and black bears also inhabit the area.
Bring along your binoculars as the wildlife viewing rivals the
quality of the fishing and certainly enhances the experience. Pack
your lunch and rest your casting arm shore-side and take in some
solitude while letting the Canada Geese and Mallards have the
water for a while.
If the leisurely lifestyle doesn't appeal to you, you
may want to tackle the streams known as Chavez and Canones. As
water levels recede in early June, the dry fly action picks up.
Entice a wild trout from the crystal clear waters with nearly every
well-placed cast of a Caddis. Pack your rod and a snack and fish
your way to the falls. Snow melt in the alpine meadows spills
through the box canyons of both creeks creating an awesome fishing
experience. The scenery is breathtaking, the fishing is fantastic,
and the experience is incomparable!
Schedule your trip to include a streamside cabin
with all the necessary comforts of home, yet situated in a secluded
picturesque setting within casting distance of the water. Choose a
small one for a couple or family of four, but groups of as many as
ten anglers can have plenty of room in a larger cabin. You are even
allowed to catch your dinner from a pond right out the front door.
Book early to get the dates you want and keep in mind
that in the fall the ranch transforms into a trophy hunter's
paradise; but don't worry fishing is included in all hunting
packages. BackRhoads Outfitting coordinates all hunting and
fishing excursions on the property, and owner Rick Rhoads brings
years of experience to every aspect of the operation. Be careful
when planning your trip, however; you may, like many others before
you, just decide to stay.
